A relaxed private-car itinerary around Kawaguchiko — the version we run, minus a few of our favourite stops.
This is the shape of a full-day private car trip from Tokyo to the Fuji Five Lakes. Times assume a 7:00 am start to beat traffic and cloud.
The day
07:00 — Leave Tokyo. Expressway west, ~2 hours with a rest-stop coffee.
09:15 — Arakura Sengen Shrine (Chureito Pagoda). The classic five-storey pagoda with Fuji behind it. ~400 steps; go early before tour buses.
10:30 — Northern lakeshore, Lake Kawaguchiko. Slow drive with pull-offs for photos. Oishi Park for the flower beds and an unobstructed view.
12:00 — Lunch. Local hoto (thick noodle hotpot) is the regional dish; we also carry a vegetarian option.
13:30 — Choose one: the Kachi Kachi ropeway for a viewpoint, a short lake cruise, or the Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato thatched-roof village.
15:00 — Lawson / Fuji photo spots on the way out, weather permitting.
16:00 — Drive back, arriving Tokyo around 18:00–19:00 depending on traffic.
Notes
- Fuji hides behind cloud on many afternoons — mornings are the bet.
- November–February give the clearest air and snow on the cone.
- On our version we swap in a couple of quieter viewpoints and adjust to the season.
